Vermeer 605J

Recently purchased a used 605J and I'm having a couple issues first issue is when gate is shut belts are loose and will not turn until hay is feeding in. I had all the belts off and relaced they are actually 8" shorter than they are supposed to be according to the book but are still very loose.
The second issue is when the bale is finished and is ejected where it was sitting on the main roller it is really shaggy and does not look very good the rest of the bale looks nice seems to form bales nice and firm.
Thanks for any info

I would bet that you have one of several possible problems:

1) Make sure that the belts are threaded through the baler correctly. If they are loose with them being eight inches short then you have a problem.

2) If they are threaded correctly and loose then the tension arm is stuck/bent. If the tension arms are working correctly then the tension springs are broken or out of adjustment.

3) Your shaggy bales are from the belts not working correctly or the type of hay your baling. PLEASE get the belts the correct length. You can break belts, spring the tension system or do other damage when making a full size bale with the belts too short.

I'm 90%sure the belts are threaded correctly I pulled them and relaced them one at a time and then replaced them .The J model balers use airbags for tension just like the newholland 855s and as far as the tension arm i do not think it is bent or stuck it is the same arm that shows the size of the bale.

Rolling ranch, get a belt diagram and check to see if the prior owner ran them wrong.

An easy way to get the entire set wrong is to remove a roller to repair bearings and then install it on the wrong side of the belts. I have done this once.

I few years ago Dad bought a used Vermeer cutter. I found a phone number on the web and called. They sent the manuals for free i believe.

Shaggy bale none side is where the bottom roller is still in contact with the bale while the gate is opening. The bale is stopping but the roller is still turning. Either shut off PLO or open gate faster( higher rpm =greater hydraulic flow=faster gate. Double check belt route I have related and installed thousands yet I have done it myself. Also check grease points on belt tighter arms. I can't remember if the J's used a spring or just the air springs by themselves check for binding or to low a starting pressure. I only worked on a few of them years ago. Hope it helps.
