What are the pros an cons of this Machine? Anyone know how parts availability is for these? Did New Idea build these or were they a rebadged machine made by someone else?

IMHO - they are outstanding mowers. Lower hp requirements too. Probably not as heavy built as some of today's mower conditioners by
Deere, NH or Krone. The mower is essentially still being produced in MF colors and model 1359 stickers.

I'm to understand the older white painted models had a continuous hex shaft driving each cutting hub and with the later red models and surely
the MF model 1359, the shaft is segmented, the gears strengthened. The bar is segmented/modular too. Each drive module has its separate
pocket of grease or oil. Doesn't share a common oil bath, so if a gear explodes in the cutter bar, the bits are contained. There is no shear hub
arrangement, so of you drove over a well head casing, expect some gear damage. From what I've read, they are not difficult to dissemble, but
not a walk in the park either. The rolls separate when the mower head is lifted - handy for expelling a plug of hay.

This mower was also made with CaseIH colors and decals as the 3309.

Below is a PAMI report on the mower. Note the clean cut and low hp requirements.

Good luck,
Bill

As Bill VA indicated, they are still being produced in AGCO's Hesston, KS factory and are branded
as Massey Ferguson. Production was moved there around 2001 when the New Idea factory in Coldwater,
OH was closed. Just don't call it a "discbine" if you go to an AGCO dealer to talk about it - you
might get a dirty look! :)

They are a good machine, well regarded. I would limit my search to those with segmented driveshafts, Avoid the older version with the single
long shaft. Difficult to change and incredibly expensive.

I bought one used about 5 years ago and it is a great machine. I have a later grey model. I advise looking over the frame carefully. Since it is
possible to drive these things fast, many discbines are beat up bad. Cracked frames, twisted drive shafts, etc. The reason I went this brand was
it is a 9' cut, not too heavy, less hp needed and prices were lower then green or NH. I run mine with a 4020 and don't want to tax a 50 year old
tractor. And, the double u-joint drive shaft is really something at turning tight.
