Brush Hog gear box

26 years ago I borrowed a brush hog 6' I think a finishing mower and used a way to big tractor on property I'd never mowed. I hit a cut off telephone pole and ruined the gear box. I paid the owner what he had in the mower and parked it behind the barn. I remember taking the gear box lid off and seeing broken gears. I actually forgot about it being there until recently. What's the chance of me finding a new gear box and getting the mower running? I'll attach some pics.

You maybe able to just rebuild the gearbox you have. Bush hog is pretty good about supplying parts. I will fault JD for using many gear box that they DO NOT support with available parts. They want you to replace the entire gearbox.

IF you can not find gears and parts for your then try and figure out what ratio it is. I am thinking yours is just s 90 degree box with a pulley on the bottom and the PTO shaft driving the input shaft. Surplus Center may have a gear box that would work. IF it is a 1 to 1 box than a used one off of a grain auger may work.

Someone posted this company on here a few days ago. They seem to have a lot to pick from. Might give them a try.
It appears you have a 307, that is a tough mower, should be able to get it fixed fairly easily.
Thanks to whoever posted this before!

Wrong gear box for a 307, several other discontinued Bush Hogs used that type of box but there is more than one part number for the bear box (gear ratios). Best bet is to call Bush Hog (800) 363-6096. I couldn't find a mower that looks exactly like that one online at Bush Hogs website.

Looks like a SQ72, if it is a 6' cutter. First generation Squealer. Should be straight splines (not tapered like most are) on the output shaft. I have
a mower exactly like that one.

Agri-Supply (www.agrisupply.com)sells replacement gear boxes for mowers and the prices are reasonable. I replaced one a couple of years ago with a gear box from them and it works just fine. You will need to know the output shaft size and spline count as well as the bolt spacing and hole size. Sid

A friend with a late model MX 8 if I recall the model or series, had broken a shaft on one of the gearboxes. I think there was a material issue, but JD was not easy to deal with on parts for this rotary mower, and I think he was told the same thing. His fields are clean and he's top notch on maintenance and care, everything is stored in a barn or under a roof. I think he was really disappointed with this mower given what happened. Amazing when you think of a 2" or larger diameter shaft breaking like that, I saw the broken stub of it, he kept it inside so it did not rust etc.

You can look up parts and price on Messicks web site. I will warn you bush hog is notorious for using several different parts on the same mower so be sure before you order. I was needing a u-joint for my 2615L mower and there was 7 options for drive shafts in 540 rpm. I called the factory and they were real helpful.
