I have a 5 foot pull behind mower, the gear box will not spin the blades, I pulled the front cover off tonight, and all looks good, however the gear on the bottom of the gear box when I spin it the blades want move, I have not got that far into it to see what is on the vertical shaft going to the blades, any one have any ideas of what's in there?

Hi Jay
Most rotary mower gearboxes are somewhat the same. An input shaft with a bevel gear meshed with at bevel gear on the vertical shaft. The vertical shaft has a bevel gear on one end and the blade mounts on the other. There are usually one seal, one bevel gear, sometimes a spacer shim or 2, and 2 bearing on each shaft. You most likely have a bad bearing somewhere.

The attached link is not for your specific gearbox but a typical Woods gearbox. I attached it so you can see what a "basic" gearbox on a rotary mower consist of.

If you can find some model info. on the mower or gearbox you probably can locate the parts to repair it via the internet. The most difficult part of the repair for me is usually removal of the blades since they are stuck on the output (vertical) shaft. Usually best practice to replace the seals while it is apart to help prevent future leaks.

Hope this helps

There's lots of info on the 'net, but spell it correctly when searching... COMER.

The gear on the vertical shaft in the example given looks to be splined. Yours may be keyed and maybe the key has sheared, if you are lucky. Does the vertical shaft spin on the top when the blades are moved and the gear doesn't?
