Massey Ferguson 135

I just bought the above tractor a few days ago. I am new to farm tractors. What is a good brand for a 5 foot rotary cutter? Any advice would be appreciated.

Good for mowing slightly overgrown gass, or good for running over 1-1/2" saplings and chopping them to bits?

It depends on what you mean by a rotary cutter and what you want to do with it. If you want to mow a weedy field, that's one thing. If you want to cut heavy brush and small trees among a rock infested pasture, that's something else again. That's why you're being asked what purpose you intend to use it for. Finish mowers are "rotary cutters" and so are bush hogs, but they are two different animals.

Joe I have a bushhog brand 296 ,6' cutter and it will make the front end light when raised but it is an extra heavy mower , I installed farmall wheel weight on my front bumper and have had no trouble since. I use it to cut grass and weeds and small saplings up to 2" , the tractor has plenty of power and the cutter is heavy enough I can cut anything that I run over . My opinion is bushhog, rhino, landpride, and woods would be my preference in brand names, just remember they all make a light duty and some make mid to heavy duty , prices will be similar for like cutters , I like heavier than needed so when the unexpected comes along I don't break things.

I've run a MF135 and larger MF tractors also for many years and a 5 ft is a good size for 135. You could run bigger on flat ground but will need front weights for safety since nose is light. My advice is a 5 ft for a 135. Good brands are Landpride, Rhino, Woods. Research their weights of each, get chain guards also so rocks etc don't go flying and hit your neck or other things. The Massey Ferguson site here in YT has a great group of experts if you need advice, and maintenance, etc tips. 135 is a great tractor, you should get Operators Manual. Good luck.

The Woods 84" I use behind my 135 is heavy duty, it's a 3 point but I don't use the top link so I can change the cutting height some by using the position control.

Thanks Finn. I have narrowed my decision to a woods mower. How much weight on the front? And who sell weights? I have already ordered a few manuals from this site.

if your 135 has the weight frame bracket up front the suitcase weights can hang on them and be tightened with bolts. These suitcase weights weigh about 80 pounds each. I keep 5 on my MF 165 frame and help offset the 700 pounds of my 6-ft Landpride rotary mower and also 4x5 round bales if I use the 3-pt bale spear. You'd probably want at least 3 to make a difference. These suitcase weights are not cheap even old ones from a boneyard.
