craftsman roto-tiller

I have made posts before about my old walk behind roto-tiller. It's a craftsman and I just put a new engine on it and it makes tons of noise when pushing it around in neutral. Like major chain drag or something...

It's a model 197.299650. Runs great except this noise. There was advice to add a fill plug but not sure where to drill and not hit something inside and have a place for a plug to protrude inward...

I found the Smitty's 00 grease at TSC so I may just to above the wheel as I assume it needs to drip down there...

Any suggestions of experience on this? I have an old message with the same question but think it's buried in the website.

thanks in advance, moday

moday,
I may have replied before, but this is what I did to my old tiller.

the drive chain broke, much smaller chain than the tine chain,
getting the wheels off was the greatest challenge, as you have to take the wheels off to open up the gearbox to replace the chain, but my redneck friend and I did it.

picture attached of where I drilled a 1/2" hole so I could add grease to the gearbox

on my tiller they added oil in the gearbox during the assembly then mated the two halves of the gear box together and that was to last a life time,

gear lube, I just stick my grease gun into the 1/2" hole and fill her up has worked fine for years after the rebuild as the axle seals are gone (will not hold oil) and could not be replaced due to wear in the housing.

old tiller works great.

I just stick a rubber plug in the hole so dirt does not get in and till on,

good luck,
word to the wise: do whatever, so you do not have to take that gearbox apart.
advice, if the gearbox goes south, buy another old tiller frame with bad motor, before you try repairing the gearbox, just not worth it in my humble opinion.

Never done a tiller but I have welded a 1/4 inch by 28 TPI to surface I want grease or oil to enter. After nut is in place drill and small hole in center of nut. Grease /oil will go thru a 1/16 inch hole.
You do need to screw a grease Zerk into the nut.
