White finishing mower / discharge

Since I value all your ideas, I am going to ask your input on this one. I have an older
White 72" finishing mower that I use that is side discharge, I have been toying with the
idea of making it into a rear discharge. Can anybody see the downside to this make over.
Thanks for any ideas...Craig

I once had a side discharge. Sold it and applied the money to a new rear discharge. I suggest you do the same. AIRC changing over to rear discharge would require a lot of structural changes.

What is your reason for wanting a rear discharge? I have a rear discharge and am not completely happy with it. It does very well on knocking down heavy grass but does a poor job of laying it out. I prefer to use side discharge in most situations cause it lays out an even well spread windrow. The rear discharge leaves clumps of grass and does not mulch as much as a side discharge.

I am sure you could strengthen the back half of the deck and remove the underside or back skirt and convert to rear discharge but I wanted you to beware you may not be happy with the results.

Not to mention that you will removed the vacuum properties designed into the deck and it won't cut as good. You'd be better off blocking the discharge and making it grind up the clippings more. The deck is designed with additional curve plates and things (including the back plate) to help make them function (even the plain Jane fabricated ones). You know how a badly plugged deck mows? Imagine it with NO suction power.
