3pt wheel rakes

Specifically a Befco, 4 wheel rake. Everything I read about wheel rakes talks about "float" and angle. So with a 3 pt model (there's a nice one for sale near me) how do you "set" the float when a standard 3 pt pretty much is going to lock in place at one height? I've got a 3 pt tedder that is a giant pain to use and I'm thinking the 3 pt wheel rake are going to be the same. Anyone ever use one and have any opinion to offer?

I owned a 3 pt wheel rake back in the 90's. I would never give up my pull type wheel rake and go back to 3 pt model as PT model is far superior to 3 pt.

Most tractors have a float on them. Mine
is where the arms attach there is a block
there that can be pulled out it works nice
on the bush hog.

You don't want it to float. I've got a double 4. Set the stop on your 3pt lever when you get it right. If you lower it more than it needs to go to just roll and rake the hay, you'll put too much weight on the tines and break them off.

Each wheel has a pivoting offset axle shaft. that will allow for floating on uneven ground.Set 3 point to correct height and
go.Some guys like em. IMHO,they do as good a good job as a pull behind. However I prefer a pull behind. There are some of each
in the neighborhood.

The 3 pt type has its place, but it doesn't corner well - one direction it stops turning, other direction it makes a big loop barely raking anything.

In heavy hay or straw the material piles up under the wheel axles and can't flow through.

They do well on uneven ground. Most come with a pin you pull, it allows some springs to float the rake over bouncy ground. Tractor carries
most of the weight, but the spring lets it go up and down some. As well the wheels pivot a bit side to side.

Glad I have one for light work and rough ditch banks, but would not want it to be my only rake.

Renter here had one. Fully mounted,no guide wheels or anything. He'd go flying across the field - bound - bound - bound... left probably a third of the hay on the ground. NOT IMPRESSED!

I have a NI 3 pt 5 bar rake, and I can rake circles around his. Maybe not as fast, but you can't bale what you left on the ground.

I had a drawbar mounted 2 wheel, my first and last. Since then I have had 4, 3 WHEEL parallel bar (side discharge....they all side discharge) since.

My main concern was having ? the weight on the hookup end and trying to get in on my drawbar working alone, which is the way I have had to
work my farm.

(quoted from post at 04:11:35 08/11/16) I've got one you can borrow if you'd like to torture yourself.
Its the same vintage as your 65. Ain't you done haying yet?

Nope. Only have about 1/4-1/3 the hay I normally would due to lack of rain. But, I just took on 1 1/2 more farms. Gonna be a busy couple of weeks, small rough fields down woods roads, etc. And one guy wants all squares, no rounds.

Thanks to all. I guess I'd have to try one before I bought one. I'd still prefer a larger Vee type, but most of those are pretty $$$$.
