802 John Deere Gear

Questions regarding the 802 John Deere Gear with 4" steel wheels: I am going to replace the 3X3 wood tongue with a new treated wood one. I need an original hitch. Are they available? Would I be better off installing a metal tongue rather than a wood one? Is it ok to paint the wheels yellow and frame green? Do these gears have any value?

Value, in Amish area severral hundred dollars. The hitch could have been a horse toung, is that what you are after?

I have a 802 running gear with a metal tongue. I will post a picture. I think yellow wheels and green axles is right. Steve

Then just get 2 pieces of quarter inch thick flat stalk about 2 1/2" wide and about a foot long and drill them for a hitch pin 3/4" hole for 5/8" pin and 2 1/2" bolts to bolt to toung. And that toung should be bigger than a 3" piece of wood, more like 4-4 1/2" wide at back end. Wagon that I could mesaure size of toung on is 55 mile away. Most of those wagons were sold with the horse toung as at that time very few tractors and later the horse toung was just cut off and plates like I said bolted on. That is the way most every toung on every piece was ever made from factory.

I have a book titled "John Deere Buggies and Wagons" with a description and 2 sketches of an 802 running gear which was introduced in 1931 according to the author,Ralph C. Hughes. The description says "A wood pole or tongue was provided for a two-horse hitch. A wood or steel tractor pole with clevis was optional." The sketches show that the wooden tongue at the hitch is rectangular and the steel tongue is a round tube. The hitch is the same for either tongue. There is no mention of original color and every 802 I have seen has been covered in rust so I'm no help there. The older John Deere gears I have worked on - 952, 953, 963 - have all been green frame with yellow wheels so it's predictable that the 802 colors are as you suggest.

Some pictures of 802 running gear tongue. Hope this helps. Steve
