Bale wagon addtl capacity

Have a couple 8x18 bale thrower wagons, they are a bit on the older side. Would be nice if I could fit a few more bales in the front end of the wagon. However, once the wagon ?fills? up, the baler will throw a bale into the wagan and it will just roll out the front end of the wagon and invariably come to rest under the front tire of the wagon. FWIW I do bale on rolling terrain. Presumable simple answer to my problem ? fabricate a front gate that is say one or one and a half feet taller than the current front gate. I actually have a 9x18 thrower wagon that has this type of taller front gate. Rather than constructing and installing a whole new gate, is there some poor man?s way of making a 12 or 18 inch gate extension that perhaps hinges or otherwise that you can fold up to use when you want to fill up your wagon?

Not an extension, but the way that it is done around here is we stop when there are about thirty bales on the wagon and stack about fifteen on the front and fifteen in the back. The thrower won't put them in the front so we do it for the thrower. It keeps you more in tune with your past and your hard laborer side too, and every wagon that you do it on adds three days to your useful life.

my dad had a light chain across all of his he cut it in the middle and put a small load binder in easy to take apart if you have to unload off the front

Best way. As long as you do not go high enough it gets hit in loading. If you have enough clearance you might use 2 chains.

We just tie a 3/4" rope a cross the front posts about 1 foot above the gate. My brother called it the 5 bale rope. Works good. Ropes were free.
