Tandem Disc Problem

I have a John Deere tandem disc. Some of the discs on one "gang" are loose. I loosened the square nut "holder" on the end, put a pipe wrench on the spool and tried to tighten the nut with a 24" crescent wrench. The spool turns, and the discs don't get tighter. Am I doing this wrong? Ideas? Techniques? Thanks for the help. kelly

I'm not sure, but I think some John Deere disks use round axle shafts. If this is the case, then trying to back hold a spool won't keep the shaft from turning. Maybe you can try heating the nut with an acetylene torch while using an impact wrench to tighten the nut before it cools down.

raise up the disk and put a big block of wood under the last few disks furthest away from the nut let the disk completely down on the wood and then try to tighten it, had same problem with my white and this worked many times.also check for bad bearings.

Holding the spool on a modern disk will not hold the gang bolt from turning. You need to hold the square part right behind the nut. It will hold the gang bolt and allow you to tighten the gang up. There are special wrenches JD has that you use with pipes.

Another option is to weld a pipe across the other end of the disc shaft, and insert a long bar in the pipe so the shaft cannot turn. Good way to tighten the gang when working alone. Also make sure all parts are clean from dirt. Dirt will pulverize with use, and the gang is loose again.
