Bought A Baler Today

I bought this baler today after looking for a while for a good one that wasn't hours away. Just got her home and will be greasing it and going over it in the days to come. Anything specific I should know/do? It's a Super Hayliner 69. I had the guy demo it on his property and watched it feed hay and tie correctly. Now, off to order a manual...........

Check that the hay dog springs are not broken. They are on top and bottom of bale chamber just under the knotter. Like big hair pin springs. Also check that the 'hay stops', they are wedge shaped on the side of the chamber further back, are there. They bolt in with carriage bolts, easy to replace. Check clearance between plunger knife and stationary knife, they run close, like 1/32". Manual will say. Check plunger safety stop adjustment, that is what shears bolt instead of breaking needles. That is just a few that I can think of. Manual will be invaluable, but you know that.

That looks real nice for a baler that old. Has definitely been in the shed.

Also, you will love the two piece drive line. Much better for turning than a short tongue-one piece.

Looks like a nice clean older shed kept baler. I would rather have an older nice baler(like yours) than a newer baler that was not taken care of.It looks like it should bale alot of hay for you. Tom

Nice baler. You will like it. If I recall correctly from looking at the parts lists a few years ago, it is identical to the NH68, except that the plunger is on roller bearings vs wood slides. I believe you can take a plunger out of a 69 and it will bolt right up to a NH68 or NH67 - no problem. When you check oil level (or change it) the gear box for the plunger, don't forget there is a gearbox that drives the feeder forks located in the plunger side of the twine box.

For some great reading, search Hugh McKay and his posts regarding the tremendous volumes of hay he and his family did back in the day with the NH69 - impressive.

Not real sure - but from your user name, I'm guessing you are a Va Tech fan. Beamer-less football is right around the corner!

Good luck,
Bill
Here is our NH68 at work...

If my Daughter were still at "Tech" I would give you her number so that you could call her if you had problems.

Amazing, 50+ year old balers still out in the field working..Nice looking baler I bet that is original paint based upon the decals.
