Welding Cutter Bar

I started out to mow Saturday morning, and the cutter bar on my old IH 990 broke. I called the dealer and they said they can have one here Wednesday or Thursday. I figured what the heck - I'll try welding it and see if I can at least get some cut. I welded it up, re-drilled the rivet hole and put it in.
I mowed 10 acres with it Saturday, and another 5 with it last night - would never have believed it would hold up - I guess it just shows - try anything once

I've welded many of them over the years and most as far as I know are still working just fine

Are you just talking about knife back, that is a common repair. Now the complete bar that is different. By Amish friends like 6' bars on their horse drawn mowers but hard to fine. My Amish friend takes two of the 5' bars and cuts them so as to be able to weld up a single 6' bar, that is also all gas welded. He is a mower repair shop and dealer. I have taken him several mowers over the years.

It was the complete bar - it broke about 12" from the pitman, right on the rivet hole. Now I'm thinking maybe I could have saved the $180 the new one costs - but I guess it can't hurt to have a spare.
Of course, the ideal solution would be a new Discbine...

I broke the pitman head off my IH 7' sickle bar and it took about a foot of the bar with it. I had welded it before. My IH dealer wanted $105.00 just for the head. As the gentleman said below, I went on line to Webb's sickle service and ended up buying a new bar complete with new head, choice of sections and getting bolts instead of rivets. It came in a cardboard tube on UPS. All said and done, it was under $110.00 or close to it. I have also always ran serrated sections and the guy I talked to there asked me what I was mowing with it. I told him it was only pasture with grass and some weeds. He said to go with the smooth sections and that is the best thing I ever did. It was like a different mower. I have since mowed over 200 acres with it and it still preforms great.
