John Deere 4200 plow cylinder

Hello
I bought a john deere 4200 plow that was missing
the cylinder to flip it over. I didnt think much of it till i
learned that it is a john deere special one, a 3 - 5
1/2. I cant seem to find another supplier for it other
then john deere itself, but its a 500 and some dollar
part through them. I was hoping there was a
cheaper cylinder to be had. Have any of you done
anything different with yours?
 
Bought a 3 1/2 x 8 standard cylinder and had an ace machinist cut it down to fit. Took three tries before we got the rod and barrel to the right length. Thankfully his work was free or i would have had more than $500 in machine work.
 
'buck up' and buy the right one. by the time you pay someone to 'Rube Goldberg' it,you will have more in it than new.Sometimes it pays to buy new/do it right. BTDT! "Spend a dollar to save a nickel"
 
Generally you can get catalog cylinders in most any combination of bores, strokes, ports and mounting styles. Check with a hydraulic equipment supplier but by the time you order it, it may cost less from Mother Deere. Wouldn't hurt to try.
 
Do you still have the switching valve? It will still work without,but will require moveing the lever both ways each time you spin it.Surplus Center,Baily Hydralics are two places to check out.They may have the size yu need.As was said Deere, at 500+ may still be cheaper.
 
When I checked JDparts for cylinder for model 4200 plow it appeared complete cylinder is NLA and individual parts must be ordered.The part AA33409, A17549 is no longer available.

There we have it. Someone's plow cylinder failed and it was cheaper to buy another plow to use as a donor. Then the plow was resold to recover money....
