New owner of 847 auto tie good or bad?

It actually was a package deal. I got a Massey Ferguson 175 with a loader and the 847 round baler for $4000. He wanted $3500 for the tractor. You do the math.So the baler became a bonus I think.
The 847's been parked tarped outside several years. Northern California. Open for input and suggestions?

847 new Holland i assume? The old chain new Holland would bale wet or dry hay beats the leaves off alfalfa
if dry. Will work until chain breaks then it will be expensive to repair but at that price you can scrap it
and come out

That's correct New holland 847 auto tie. It's shows a 4x5 bale. Is that 4 wide and 5 high? Can you silage wrap these if you had a silage wrapper?

I had a NH 847, not auto tie. It is not exactly a 4 x 5 baler, NH had some odd measurement, but 4 x 5 is close enough for government work. I would avoid wet
or damp hay if possible because it puts more strain on the baler, also the tractor since the baler is hard to pull anyway and damp hay will add to the strain. If
you stop the baler with most of a bale in it it is difficult to restart and may cause broken shear bolts. Start the wrapping process while the baler is running
with the full bale if possible.

The bale may be wrapped and dumped with out stopping the bale from turning, but it is better to stop the bale after tieing and then eject it. The main drive
chain may jump off if the bale is dumped with the bale still turning, also that makes the bale look rougher. The chain runs on a wooden track, and a cure for
the jumping chain problem is to screw a narrow board to the track so the chain can't(hopefully) jump off the track.

Oil the chains regularly.

64 hp Long tractor. I have had 2 models of Vermeer belt balers that were much easier to pull.
