Hydraulic Rake - 9ft 3pt rake

Saw a 9ft New Holland 258 rake for sale recently. The reel was hydraulically driven vs ground driven. One thing I really like about my present JD350 3pt mounted rake is its PTO powered. I can set the reel speed independent of the ground speed. I assume one can do the same with a hydraulically powered rake?

How reliable are the hydraulically driven rakes like the NH 258? Is the hydraulic drive just a breakdown just waiting to happen?

It's one thing to expect the tractor's hydraulics to lift a lifting cylinder, but working a hydraulic motor for hours on end - is this a good idea?

Older tractors - I have a MF50, the only hydraulics are from the 3pt lift pump. Not sure that's enough. What about something like a Ford 3000?

On a different note:

Anyone ever make a 9ft 3pt mounted rake or pull behind 9ft PTO powered rollabar type rake?

Thanks!
Bill

hyd motors such as utilized on rakes can be very reliable but they do tend to heat the tractors hyd oil. Vermeer has utilized hyd motors to power rakes for yrs. I purchased a new Vermeer R23 hyd powered rake way back in '92

A friend made an old MF/Dearborn 3 pt rake to hydralics. just put a small pump on the PTO with a small reservoir on the rake.A motor on the rake and a diverter valve to adjust speed.

I had an AC PTO driven 3pt rake that I wish I never sold. We had a tractor with ground speed pto and it was a wonderful combo for that rake.

I recently got a Massey Ferguson 25 3pt, pto driven hay rake for $350 and didn't have to do anything to it. Used it last week, and it worked flawlessly.
