Saw a 9ft New Holland 258 rake for sale recently. The reel was hydraulically driven vs ground driven. One thing I really like about my present JD350 3pt mounted rake is its PTO powered. I can set the reel speed independent of the ground speed. I assume one can do the same with a hydraulically powered rake?
How reliable are the hydraulically driven rakes like the NH 258? Is the hydraulic drive just a breakdown just waiting to happen?
It's one thing to expect the tractor's hydraulics to lift a lifting cylinder, but working a hydraulic motor for hours on end - is this a good idea?
Older tractors - I have a MF50, the only hydraulics are from the 3pt lift pump. Not sure that's enough. What about something like a Ford 3000?
On a different note:
Anyone ever make a 9ft 3pt mounted rake or pull behind 9ft PTO powered rollabar type rake?
Thanks!
Bill
