trouble with the 1207 today

I did some adjustments on my 1207 today. Adjusted some guards and the holddowns, lowered the reel and changed the cutting height. I knocked down some junky hay that I don't bale and it worked perfectly. I tried to cut a few rounds of good hay and had a lot of plugging. It seems to wad up between the tines/bats and the board, right in front of the rolls. Then the wad hangs down and flattens the hay in front of the knife. I have the tines timed with the bolt just forward of the middle of the slot as recommended. Seemed to be worst going downhill. The hay is cut clean but doesn't want to go through the rolls. Raised the height and that helped a little. We got a little rain last night so it was damp near the ground but not bad. I welcome any suggestions, I only cut half of what I intended to and gave up.

I had this EXACT problem briefly with my Hesston 1110 this summer cutting some thick timothy. Turned out one side of the roller gap adjustment had work loose and the rollers on the left side were hard against each other. Coupled with that and roll pressure, and sometimes nothing could get into the rollers for them to grab. Just like you - going down a hill, from time to time, hay would pile up and a wad would come over the top of the reel from not feeding. I thought it was just VERY heavy hay, but once I found the rolls out of adjustment and reset that - all was good. BTW - I have my rolls adjusted such that I can run a piece of plastic from a 5 gallon oil can (read thickness) between the rollers.

Aside from the above - what tipped me off I had a roller problem was - I couldn't roll the rollers by hand. This is very easy to do on my Hesston and from there, I looked deeper at the rollers and found the problem.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Bill
