New holland knotter new knife makes problems

Ok try to mane this shortright side twine stopped cutting off tried sharking didn't work. Purchased new knives not same thickness thinner by half tried rebalin some banana bales knot on right side cut off right by knot left side no knot or it pulled out. Oh balers a model 68 wife talked to different dealer than I got knives from said thin knife is problem. Its 50 miles to drag this thing to a dealer either way you guys have helped more than anyone any ideas?

Don't think the knife is the problem. Need to look at knot just as it comes off the knotter.

Sounds like the billhook is missing one or both strands of twine. If there is a knot in one end, tell us which one, top of bale or front (needle side) of bale.

Do you have a book(owner's manual)?Sounds like the 'twine finger' is not pushing the string to the bill hook. Either too much clearance between needle and finger,or finger not swinging far enough. Or the twine is slipping out of the twine holder disks. Order a 40 dollar book. Adjust it "by the book",start to finish. It WILL bale, unless it is just plain wore out.BTW,the book will have a trouble shooting guide with PICTURES.

The baler was working fine until the right side started to half cut the twine. I couldn't get the old knife to sharpen up enough to cut reliably was messing up 2 out of 4 bales. Left side was knotting good. Replaced both knives right side has a knot but is cut off right above knot maybe 1/8 above left side now has no knot with both ends cut clean. Other than banan bales due to thick and thin windows it was baling good. The only book I've obtained has drawings not pictures looks made on a copy machine not much help. If a better book is available where?

Order one from your NewHolland dealer. You can help the 'banana bale problem by keeping the feed more consistent. Count strokes.Try to keep the strokes somewhat consistent. That means doing some shifting and a bit of 'throttle management'.Back when I ran NH 'big chamber' (78;282;283;425) I aimed for 20 spb. At 15,shift down. At 25,shift up. work the throttle some too.Your 'mileage' may vary. BTW,my CIH 8530 inline doesnt care. It always makes the same constint bale, regardless of feed rate.

Im wondering if the knife/wiper arm is not traveling right. The pivot bushing/shaft could be worn enough and letting the arm move around.Or the brass ball is worn and not letting the arm swing far enough?Since I cant see it,it's pretty hard to advise....

you cant get those twine knives sharp enough in my opinion.. I quit using file and went to a stone or better yet one of those diamond flat sharpeners from hardware store works great.. but you said you bought new so as suggested look at the arm that runs that esp. look at that bushing.. those suckers get flat spots on them and dont roll or gummed up and dont roll which makes flat spots.. change them out.. they can cause heck if not rolling..
let us know what you find out the fix is.

I would bet that the wiper arm got bent at the time the knife quit cutting the twine right. The knife needs to be sharp but usually a dull knife will not cause total knot failure. Flip your knotter up and work the wiper arm back and forth over the billhook. If the arm is not making good light contact you need to adjust/bend the arm until it does.

Ok got this thing partly figured out thanks for all replies. And thanks to FB macafoos in benton il a former new Holland dealer. They came up with a book not same number but has same knitter. Left side twine finger out of adjustment. And the new knives were wrong be all that is available. Wife picked up new heavy duty knife arm bless her the one old knife on left side was original. It has a shoulder that scoops the 2 twines into the sharp side. The right side didn't have that. The new knives don't have that at all for the heavyduty knife arm has a second piece riveted on it does not come with the replacement knives. I wish I could post some pictures but is beyond my skills right now. Also I dropped the needles down closer per the book. Rebaled 8 banana bales with the tension so tight that it was about to break the plastic string. Tied perfect then the bolt that holds the swinging feeder fork on this baler broke and came part way out. Game over for now. Only question is how did right side run for years (3)at about 2500 bales per year with a knife with no shoulder? Will be baling late this week when I get back from Utah. I will keep you guys updated. Thanks again
