NH Hayliner 271

I am looking at the chute that bales go through on the way out of the baler. On top is the plate that adjusts the tension on the bale and has a slot for the gear that measures the movement of the bale and trips the knotter. Below is a similar looking plate that the bale rides on and also has such a slot. That plate is badly rusted. I have cleaned it up as best I can and painted with rust converter but it is rusted through in places. I plan to add a diamond plate covering over it.

So far as I can see that slot serves no purpose. If I am right then I will save work and put the diamond plate right over the whole plate including the slot. Am I missing something here?

I have one and noticed that also. I think NH just used the same part with the slot top and bottom to save money. It serves no purpose on the bottom, I just welded it up.

Weld right over the slot. Same reason some guys insist on putting two twine finger return springs on the twine finger shaft. The straps are both punched for the spring mount in manufacturing, but only one spring is needed.

Using the same part in multiple applications is commonly done in manufacturing. But I would question using diamond plate. I think a smooth plate would be better. Doesn't have to be very thick. Or try to find a used one. Esch Hay Equipment is a good place to try.

I made that rail once using 2" x6" channel iron.Bought an old baler(NH#78) that had hay left in it.The rail was rusted out.The rail worked "super".

I had an old 65 that I did what delta did.. cut the old out and welded in new angle iron to size.. worked very well ...
