which end of pto shaft goes on implement

I will confess ahead of time that this is a dumb question, but here goes. With a pto shaft with a radial pin clutch at one end, which end goes to the implement, say a tedder or rotary rake? I generally put the clutch end on the tractor, but I have seen tedders with it mounted on the implement. Does it make a difference? And in the same vein, should the outer or inner shaft half go on the tractor? Speaking of the lemor or three point shafts, not the old square ones. Thanks

I don't think I have ever seen a pto shaft that had the 1 3/8 spline on both ends. generally it is aplined on one end and something else on the implement end.

I have always installed them with the clutch on the implement, all equipment I have ever sold ,setup/used was this way,,, not sure if it really matters though

Have a disc mower with clutch on tractor end, bought it new that way.

My thinking is such a clutch is designed to protect PTO brake when you shut off PTO, lets implement keep turning and tractor PTO shaft stop. If clutch is on tractor end, the tractor doesn't have to stop the whole PTO shaft every time.

Have at least two implements that have "540 spline" on both ends of the PTO shaft.

Actualy, both of my Kuhn tedders have the same 1 3/8" spline on each end, one with a pin clutch and the other with a push pin disconnect. It can go either way

No clutch: Which ever direction keeps rain water from running down the tube if I leave it outside, which I usually don't.

Clutch: OEM operator's manual of my drum mower says clutch goes on the mower end....makes sense as the drum is what continues to run after killing the pto power. The other thing nice about having it there is that if you attach it to the tractor first and then the implement, on an independent PTO or any tractor that locks the PTO shaft when off, you can easily rotate the clutch to get the splines to line up allowing you to engage the shaft to the implement.

All equipment I have with an over running clutch has it on the implement (mowers, tedder, square baler).
Both of my trailed mowers (Kuhn,Claas), tedder and round baler have 1 3/8 spline shafts on them to allow removing the pto shaft for transport behind a pickup. Had to pull the shaft apart on my old baler to prevent damaging the tail gate (again).

I think some are confusing the radial pin (overload) clutch that you refer to with a standard ORC (pawl clutch). The radial clutch you're talking about.... I don't think it matters. I have some machines that had it on the tractor yolk and some that have it placed on the machine end.. both from the factory. I put it wherever it works easiest for hooking it up..... As far as where the profiles go... have them both ways as well but I generally prefer the inner profile on the tractor end. Just as long as it's placed where it doesn't fill with water. Some machines I have turned around simply so they can share a shaft or half a shaft with other machines so I can steal one quickly if I tear up a cross.
