Help needed - JD 290 corn planter

I am a new member who is using older farm equipment to plant food plots. I recently broke the chain for the lift clutch on a JD 290 (2) row corn planter. Not sure if the chain broke due to age or if other problems caused the break. Planter was working great for a 3/4 acre plot. My manual does not show a picture/diagram of how the chain goes onto the sprockets and not matter how I try, the chain seems to short (No. 32 chain, 37 links) Can someone provide a picture/diagram of a similar planter that shows chain configuration? Sorry to ask such a simple question, but am at a lose as to how the chain goes on. Is there anyone in the Otsego/Allegan area that may have knowledge of this specific planter? Any help would be appreciated, thank you

Here are some pics of the one I have.

Ok. However if you are that new here you may
not be able to post pics yet. Maybe if you
go to the help or feedback forum and ask
them to allow it they will.

I have a 290 I use ,, I went to take pics of it, but mine has been converted to 3pt and does not have the chain on the lift system anymore,, if the chain was installed backwards they will break, here is a shot I did take of mine showing the chains installed the correct direction in case that was your issue,, sorry I cannot help more,

Thank you Case, the chain was on correctly as I have used it for a couple of years without any issues. I appreciate your help. I have tried to attach a picture of my unit. There are 3 sprockets, one is the drive sprocket at the front, then the lift gear and at the rear an idler sprocket. Using 37 links, there appears to be no way the chain will fit, engaging all three.

I have one , later I'll try and get some pics . Got about 700 bales ready as soon as the
dew is off.

Since the chain broke, could it be that you lost part of the "original" thereby making it too short?

Ron, I did not know if I lost part of the chain, so purchased new and used the number of links called for in JD manual. Still appears short no matter how I try to put it on. Seems rather straight forward when I look at it, but can't understand why I come up short, when I go by what the manual recommends. I can add links obviously, but not sure what the repercussions of that might be on the overall function of the planter. I think I need to get the chain on first, then trouble shoot to see if there are other issues that are the causing the chain to break.

mtny,

Any chance of getting pictures of your chain configuration on your JD 290 planter?
Really be appreciated.
