Problem with John Deere 240w baler (Video Inside)

I'm posting this on behalf of my neighbor so I don't know much about this baler or the problem beyond what you see in the video, he also explains a bit. He's an older guy that knows quite a bit about this stuff but he's stumped so I thought I'd post and see if anyone here knows.

Here's the video link: https://vid.me/jZnn

You can see that one gear there is loose and the mechanism doesn't complete the cycle so it's something in that housing. The operators manual doesn't seem to say anything about it. I'm trying to find the service/parts manual but thought I'd post here in the meantime. Thanks for any help.

Good luck finding someone that is knowledgeable on a 214W that has tying boxes in lieu of twister hooks. All I can say is "Run Forest Run" as I never understood the concept of the tying boxes.

o you have any suggestions as to where to look into it?

Yeah it's a 214w, no S. It requires 4 spools of wire to run, i know that. Were you able to get the video to play?

Interesting. Only ever saw one wire tie baler in my lifetime, they are not common up here.

Think that is a kinda special rare type of tie as well, hope he finds some help. Would almost have to guess a gear is stripped inside there, if it
stops rotating when it should have kept spinning a full half revolution? Maybe there was a simple pin through a shaft holding a gear inside, pin
broke off and catches just enough to move the shaft until it has to work? That would be a simpler fix!

Thanks for the video, is neat to see.

Oh, you are aware JD has an on line parts look up, if you search for the right model baler you should end up with a diagram?

I'm on my iPad and it got unhappy, but should be able to find something here.

Look at JD PC138 for 116w baler. Shows what is in the housing on page 38.

No experience with them other than I have seen 116w.

I've been around JD wire sq balers since the mid 60's and that is the the 1st 214W I seen in a photo(video). I've seen plenty of 214WS balers as my Dad bought a new one plus others I saw while employed at JD dealership.

My guess is the pinion gears(parts key 29) or something associated with them have stripped. Box will require opening up for an inspection. If it were my baler I look for a baler with twister or bill hooks. IIRC those balers must twist the wire on each end of bale which could lead to double tying problems

Are you positive model is 214W not 214WS?
Hey Jim, just a side note here since I saw your posting on this subject: "Keeping it legal", I know not of a 214...... but on my 375 roller, once I did what you said about 5 ft flat wws my herniated navels disappeared, thanks.

hanks for the help. From what I can tell I'm not sure he's fond of this baler. I printed out the diagram and gave it to him and he's gonna see if he can even get parts. Are those gears something that can be ordered?

Problem could also be a sheared key. All gears in housing according to JDparts.com are no longer available.
f they're no longer available does that mean he's completely out of luck? Time for a new baler?
