JD Single point ripper

I just purchased this JD ripper. Was wondering if any one has some info on it. Maybe the model number and what years they where made. This one was hardly used b the looks of it. There is a steel tag with a number stamped in it hanging from the depth handle. Was wondering what the chain is that is attached to the frame and goes to the axle. Thanks for looking and responding with some info.

A previous owner had problems with the wheel-axle fliping backwards under the unit and then it would not lift or control depth. There is something wrong in the linccage that allows that to happen, possibly not assembled correctly. But that is so they would not have to get a tractor with loader to lift the unit up so they could manually pull the wheel-axle back in place. And could date to the 30's and was probably pulled by a large crawler as Deere knew when things like that were first made they did not have a big enough tractor to pull them. A D that was the largest JD made did not have enough power to pull one when set as deep as would go and the deeper they are set (same as a moldboard plow with that wheel flipping backwards) the harder the pull. The enclosed clutch makes me thing more the 40's than the 30's tho. Most do not have the mole anymore being lost under ground 70 years ago.

That safety chain was for going down the road. My subsoiler has the same setup and others I have seen have it also. I sure like it at the shows, that way if the kids trip it,it won't fall to the ground. It is a model 15.

Used one of those many years ago on my Grandma's farm. That sucker would pull up clay clods 2 feet across in dry land behind the 49 JD A.
Also put in a lot of black plastic waterline with it.

My late FIL gave me one similar that he used to pull behind a Huber (don't recall model) in the mid to late 40s(?). He said he would get into a layer of shale just under the surface once in a while and the tractor would grunt and the blue smoke would come off the subsoiler shank, and she would "roll rock". It still works, but as Leroy said, the mole is long gone.
