JD 530 Bale Size Adjustment

Just about ready to start baling with a new to me 530 JD baler with an 1850 gas Oliver. The previous owner had it set for 5 X 6 bales. I would like to set it for 5X5 bales. How for sould I move the adjustment to get reasonable close to the 5X5 size? Is there anything else I should do?

Setting bale size is sorta trial & error. Loosen knob in your photo and slide it down in the slot about 1/3 of the way then tighten nut. Bale a bale and check size of bale.

When you get it figured out mark it with a sharpie so you know where to put it for a certain size if you want to change between sizes. Someone did this to mine before I got it and it has been really helpful.

Back when I first moved here rollers were becoming the norm. So I bought rolled hay for my livestock. Advertising consisted of "...... and bailed with a JD baler..........".

Nobody around here sells by wt. just by the bale; excuse is that it's too far to a set of scales which is true and time consuming. Took me awhile to figure out that JD balers, like this 530 have a bale size adjustment. Once I figured that out I was ready to negotiate price based upon the diameter and quality.

Good thought on marking the adjuster to the slot bar. I'll try that before and after I make the adjustment.
I have a dyometer to weigh things by picking them up suspended. I want to do that with one of the bales just to see what the weight is considering the size and moisture content.

There's also another factor to consider besides diameter & quality and that's the amount of hyd pressure exerted on the belts during baling.

Is that a tweak also? I can't tweak my 375. Course leaking (seals) could maybe reduce it and make for a sloppy (less dense) bale...you think?
