NH 268 Plunger removal

Any hints or steps on removing the plunger on a NH 268 baler for bearing replacement? Hay wedges are out, stationary knife is out for sharpening, plunger connecting rod is disconnected from the crank, etc. I know the finger feed connecting lever also needs to be disconnected from the feeder drive pin on the plunger - I assume that disconnects by removing the nut on the drive pin that is torqued to 240 ft lbs. I know I haven't had that pin apart in the 30 years I have had this unit and it may not have been off before that! Again, any hints or cautions?? Is it safe to use an electric impact wrench to remove that nut? Does the adjustment assembly below that nut also need to be removed to facilitate removal of the plunger?

If you go to New Holland's website - you can download/print exploded views of the baler. This should give you a pretty clear picture of what lays in the path of finishing removal of the plunger. I like impact/air wrenches as the short burst of torque doesn't tend to bend/warp things like a big pry bar.

A couple of things to consider while you've got the plunger out - is freeing the plunger knife (along with sharpening and maybe fitting some shims as req'd on reinstall), check the guide rails (if it has them), the sleeve/bushing in the plunger pitman arm. I thought mine was tight enough on a New Holland 68, but once out, I could see the play in it. Replaced that bushing (a press fit) and it really quietened down the baler. Also check your plunger bearings.

Fine baler, the 268, IMHO.

Good luck,
Bill
