JD 467 baler question or any baler

Our baler has baled 8000 bales so far. Does anyone replace the roller chains after baling so many bales? Ours has been kept oiled on a regular basis and the chains appears ok. I know bearings also go out after much use. Anyone replace these before they go out?

Take the chains lose and see how much wear you have in the rollers. I would bet it is more than you think. I replace the chains more often than you have, about every 2500-3000 bales. Chains are about 20% of what the sprockets cost and a worn chain wears out the sprocket much faster.

I used a laser thermometer to check bearings, any of them 25* warmer than the others gets replaced. Check the temps after you run the baler for 15-20 min. Thermometers are available at Harbor Freight & Sears and probably a lot of other places. Cost varies, generally $25-40.

I don't know if there is a set number of bales, but like JD Seller says, they're probably in need of replacement. Loosen them up and if they have much side to side play (can make it arc sideways) or if you can take a length of the chain and push/pull it much at all with the slop between links, it's time.

We borrowed a neighbors NH baler last fall for 3rd crop when weather and storage weren't on our side, and all the chains were stretched beyond useful life. He went over all the problems he was having with it when I went to pick it up, so I spent the day replacing worn out chains and adjusting it. I think I got pretty much all the bugs worked out and it baled 40-50 bales flawlessly. He was extremely happy when I brought it back and I showed him what I had all done to it.
