going to look at a NI 5209 hay mower ,, any pros or cons about them ,,anything to look for it a 1990 guy wants $5000 thanks cdv

There is lots to know about them. Old models, one piece driveshaft through all modules. Old Modules have short hex sections not the full length. Old models the pole is weak and light frame look for welds on frame.

Newer ones have short shafts linking modules, larger hex surface areas, pole is gusseted and frame cross tube 1/8" thicker.

Look at modules, set one to 90 degrees, a twisted one piece shaft is a devil to get out. You can compensate a bit turning turtle 180 to move half a tooth off.

Tractor side cv is commonly worn out and silly expensive to replace.

I bought a 1990 new, was the gray model. Outstanding cutting ability, but frame was weak at the pivot- not welded enough- one side only. I pulled the frame out and reinforced it. Major job- mentioned my fix to dealer and he confirmed later ones were made that way. Early slip clutch had 2 plates, later 3, and mine was switched under warranty. I ran mine 11 years, then sold it to son, I think for 3500. 5000 is too high now. Another change on the red machines is a sturdier casting that the turtles mount on. It protects the mounting bolts better. Machine was good- never plugged it in 11 years. Crossing point rows....what goes in the front goes out the back in a new windrow.

Prices on used disc mower/conditioners (or discbine if it's a New Holland, of course) are crazy stupid around here. Somebody local just bought a used Gehl 2365 for $10,000, which I think is a lot for an orphan.

IMHO - they are a very good machine. Not as snazzy with shear hubs and ultra heavy metal, but lighter to pull, lower tongue/drawbar weight, less demanding on hp and IMHO a time tested, proven design. MF still makes this machine as the model 1359.

Below is a link to a test report on the early 5209.

Good luck,
Bill
