Not sure if photo will upload, but this NH 316 followed me home yesterday. Paid 15 hunnerd for it. A cousin had one like it years ago but the front joint of the PTO on it would break regularly. My guess is that if the shaft isn't level with the tongue of the tractor, that would be the result, or is that a weak point on these balers??
I'm gonna try and dig up a manual in the meantime and hope to be using it toward the end of this week. I'll keep the old 269 for now till I get the bugs, if any, out of this one....

Let's see if this works......

IMHO - the 316 is/was one of the best balers NH ever made.

With a credit card, you can download a PDF of the manual from New Holland's website. Also available for free
are printable PDFs of exploded parts views - handy when working on the baler.

The PTO shaft might be a combination of not being level as it goes to the tractor's PTO and then compounded in
a turn. Bottom line is - it shouldn't break.

Another thing to check that can wreck a PTO shaft is a frozen slip clutch.

Good luck,
Bill

Lucky - I've been looking for a while and ANYTHING that looks to be in decent shape even the old 68 balers will bring a $1000 in operating condition. Anything "nice" like that is closer to $3000 starting and up to $6000 in good shape.

Looks like the baler you bought has the heavy duty pto. Check and see if the power pivot joint at the hanger on the tongue moves and is lubed up. And as you said, the shaft should run as level as possible. Bill is correct concerning the pto slip clutch. It is designed to slip a little on each plunger stroke at high capacity baling. Loosen the clutch springs and make sure it slips and tighten them to the correct length. While you are at, take the clutch apart and clean it up and check the drive pawls . Some times a smaller tractor will break more shear pins than a larger tractor as well. Hope this helps. Good baler, good luck......Ron

Thanks fellas. Gonna order a manual today. The guy had a sprayer set up on it so there are 4 holes punched in the top over the pickup. Maybe he thought that should reduce the price?? I lucked out as the ad was only about ten minutes old and was about a 40 minute drive away. Anyway, I'll find out later in the week how good this thing works. I'll check the slip clutch adjustment too. Thanks again
