IH Sickle bar mower finding rivets

I have an old IH sickle bar mower. I have never seen a manual and don't know the right name for parts so I'll try to describe my problem and hope someone can cure my ignorance...
I found 5/8" rivets at Tractor Supply that fit great for securing the teeth to the bar. My problem came with attaching the bar to the gear box. The added thickness of the sickle bar the teeth and the arm that attaches the bar to the gear box requires a longer rivet. The 5/8 " rivet is way too short to hold the 3 parts together. I tried steel bolts to replace the 9 rivets that secure the 3 parts together. the only bolts with lock nuts to match i could find locally was 10-24.( I think the opening will accept either 3/16 diameter rivet or maybe 1/4".) 8 of the nine bolts snapped within 30 feet of engaging the cutter. My question is, where can I find rivets over 1", or what bolt will hold up to normal use?

You might consider contacting <a href="http://www.sickleservice.com/parts/rivets.html?p=2">Webb's Sickle Service</a> for the longer rivets.

Hope this helps.

I have switched all my sickle bar mowers over to bolt all the way across and have yet to have the bolts break but they are special bolts not just ones you buy at a hardware store. Places like Orscheln's and TSC should have boxes of bolts and rivets in many lengths in there area where they sell the sections and guards etc.

Just got a good shipment from sickle service last week. They will have everything you need. It is cheaper to buy the rebuild kits for your sickle length.

Does anyone know if the bar stock is available?? I have a 6ft -- 16A rear mount on a Farmall Super A .. and would like to get a back up knife.
I found the complete knife on webb's sickle service for $130 with shipping.. but wondering if I can get just the bar stock..

Any ideas?

That bar stock is universal on 99.99% of mowers, any with a 3" section, and with as many as has been junked should be a lot of old bars laying around.

I would asked them if you can buy just the bar, I can't imagine that they would not have it. I know you can buy them without the head. $130.00 seems high as mine was a 7' one complete with sections and the head. It was $106.00 without shipping added. I don't see how you could put one together for that. JMHO.

Forget the rivets. Buy a pack of bolts. . Then source the longer bolts for the headpiece, You don't need a 100 pack of those.
