Baler belt lacing pins breaking

We have a CIH 8430 baler that has done a really good job for us. Yesterday we had a belt split & got to looking for the cause. Found that the little cable that holds the lacings together was broken (from wear I think) Looked at the rest of the belts & found they were also broken but hadn't came out yet. Just wondering if anybody else has had that problem. I don't know how old the belts are but they are all in good shape and the lacing clips are good. We run the baler the same speed that we always have and the hay is good & dry so I'm thinking age of the pins. We replaced all of them with 3/32 308-16 stainless welding rod which I think will last a lot longer. Just wondering what you all think about it. Keith

When I was baling a lot of bales, I tried to change the laces at least once a year, and sometimes twice. It was easier to do it on my schedule then right before a rain.

I think you have identified the problem and perhaps solved it. When I was a kid dad would replace those about every 3 years on the round baler. We had small rods that went thru them.

I've found the cable tending to break too. I've replaced many with welding rod. Brazing rod was suggested by one source but it failed quickly for me.

It's common. It's a bear to get them out too after they're broken. They're supposed to have a nylon coated cable through them.

I think Deere recommended changing out the lacing pins every 1500 bales. Yes they come out easier when they are worn as opposed to broken.

We waited too long and broke the cable on one belt. Pulled the machine home with the tractor and found several breaks in the remaining cables. It took hours in the dark trying to separate and remove the busted pieces of cable. Dad keeps a piece of cable in his baler box for that repair.

Lazy WP has the best idea. Replace on your schedule while the cable comes out as one piece. So much easier and faster.

Well I would bet that if you read the operator manual that your supposed to replace the lace pin every so many bales. Your SS welding rods will work but now you will tear/wear out the lacing rather than the pins/cables.

Out of the JD 568 round baler operator's manual:

"Check pins for wear or breakage every 2000 bales (every 1000 bales in sandy conditions). Replace pins if broken, or if more than one-third of pin thickness is worn through."

We replace the pins every other week in the fall while baling corn stalks. The pins are less than $2 each and you can change them all in under ten minutes if they are not broken. We have not had a split lacing in 3-4 years doing this. Also resize your belts regularly. We di it once each year. I want them to be within 3 inches of the same total length when operating and exactly the same length when resized.
