$3200 well spent - Gehl 2365 Disc Mower Conditioner

Hey all,

Bought this little gem a couple weeks ago and finally got to cutting hey yesterday. I only have 23 acres of hay, but it's in 4 fields. One field is contiguous to the farm, but inaccessible to the rest of the crop ground. I have to drive 4.4 miles through town to get to it. I took it easy and went 6 mph. It only took me 9 hours with drive time. Never would have done that with a reel and sickle machine.

Too bad Gehl quit making farm equipment. This is what they were making in 1996. I imagine they'd be making the best unit available today if they had kept going.

You will be amazed at the difference - sounds like
you already are. I run about 100 acres or so through
my 935 (JD) each year. I change the blades once a
year or flip them over. It will mow as fast as you can
stay in the seat. They are a magical tool that takes
the pain out of a chore.

I've pulled a fair number of different disc mower conditioners. NI 5209, NH 1411, CIH Dcx133, I even remember dad demoing a 2345 or 2365 when I was young, but I've never owned one myself because I've never had hay until now.

I grew up with a 469 and have also pulled a JD 1525 (they were junk from the factory). Our ground is pretty hilly and rocky, I spent many hours replacing rock guards and sickle sections on those machines. I also own a Hesston 6450 I used to cut CRP ground. I knew I didn't want to mess with any sort of reel and sickle machine. Sickles have a very low tolerance for anthills, molehills, rocks, and uneven ground. Disc mower conditioners don't like them either, but they'll handle them better. And they don't plug when trying to finish the last 4 feet in the middle of a field.....

I was actually looking for a vermeer MC1030, but was having a hard time justifying the $13k average price for 23 acres hay.

Set your skid shoes in the highest position, especially if your ground is stony. Your next cutting will come up better, and
you'll hit far fewer stones. They're still killers on blades......
