Hesston 1110 Haying

Positive: The Hesston 1110 cuts great, crimps the hay great - had a great day out with it today.

Negative: This thing is incredibly noisy! Haven't been able to isolate, but think it's more of all of the above, Half swaybar probably needs new
bearings, probably need a complete new cutter bar / guards, sickle sections, etc., reel bearings probably need replaced, though they turn freely.

Got the rollers timed, set the seckle sections down on the guards. Welded up the skid shoes from miles of wear and set them to max height of
5 inches. Not enough time in the day/week/month! Fundamentally this Hesston design is IMHO a very good.

Like I said, the Hesston 1110 did everything it was supposed to do, NEVER once clogged, JD 5055d tractor pulled it like a dream - but it
sounded like a machine about to fly apart any second! Now that I know it works, next decision is - keep this mower and spend some goodly
$$$'s on it or send it down the road after hay season and continue looking for a 9ft haybine.

Videos uploading to youtube - will post those links tomorrow.

Forgot to add a few more pics - the handy work of the a Hesston 1110....

Tried to set the discharge width wide as possible, without having my tractor's wheels mash it down as I cut the next pass. Could have been a bit more narrow. I kind of like making a windrow on one level as it's easy to tell my kids - center the tractor over the windrow as you pull the tedder. Narrow windrow makes for a nice target when tedding!

I'm not totally happy with the quality of hay (timothy) in this field. While we controlled broad leaf weeds, these fields that have been neglected for some 30 years are a seed repository for all mannor of grasses. I was surprised at the vigor they came up and competed with the timothy. To give a measure of just how bad this field was - last year, after spraying with broad leaf killing herbicide, we got maybe 150 square bales of hay. This field is about 6 acres. Don't really have a feel for the yield his time around, but have warned everyone - be prepared for a long day of it come Thursday when we bale.

Check that big nut behind the belt pulley that runs the bell crank. Those are tapered bearings in there like wheel bearings. If you don't have a wrench big enough, take a dull chisel or something to one corner of the nut and hit it with a big hammer. If those bearings are the least little bit loose,it'll hammer to beat the band.
Grease it real good after you check it. Pump it full until you start to hear the seal crackle.

Keep us posted bill, I am estimating from the picture if indeed the field is all of 6 acres your 348 should pump out 250 more brick like bales from this field than last year.
