New Idea Side delivery rake #5

I am trying to replace a broken part on my side rake. I am having great difficulty pulling the axle out due to a stubborn gear. Does anyone know if there is a secret to getting the axle to slide through this particular gear?? the smaller of the two..

I am afraid we will need a description of your rake as I don't think there ever was a No.5 New Idea rake. There was a McCormick No. 5 rake tho. Is your rake a parallel bar unit or is it older? Number of bars? And last is it on rubber or steel? The only one to have a single digit number was the No. 4 4 bar on steel. all otheres were 2 digits in number.
