We have a neighbor that has a 1209 haybine that is not in perfect shape but he is only asking $350 for it. The wobble box on the sickle has bearings going out and the rollers have seen there better days but just wondering what everyones opinions are on them as a machine. I am confident that I can do the work to repair the wobble box by myself. The rollers are the one part that concern me. Just looking for thoughts or opinions.

JD wobble boxes are tricky to rebuild. Be sure wobble box mounting bracket hasn't been broken loose & rewelded as that repair usually won't last very long.

They weren't well regarded 'here' when new. You can buy a lot of aggravation for $350.

It doesn't sound like a good restoration project. Are the rollers otherwise intact, i.e. no rubber patches missing? If it will cut, condition and otherwise function as is - field ready, might be worth a shot if your acrage is small. Could tie you over for a few years or more until you find something better. Don't think I'd buy that model planning on spending any $$$'s on it. Run it until it breaks and get your scrap $$'s out of it.

Just a thought.

Good luck,
Bill

If there are plenty of places where the rubber is split and coming off the rolls, it is not likely to stay on there very well, and with chunks missing it won't crimp your stems. They get big $$$$$ to recover those rolls.

I just went through the wobbler on my 1207. It needed a seal on the pulley shaft so I replaced all the needle bearings, too. Not a hard job at all except for the wobbler pins and bushings. I left those alone for now. I found another one a little older but less abused. Rolls are good so I have a lifetime of spare parts. I have a scanned copy of the tech manual. If you want it send me your email address.

As far as the work needed it is mainly with the rollers. We got a third roller with the machine that has good rubber but a broke shaft. As far a working on it that shouldn't be problem. We bale about 7000 small squares a year and do a lot of cutting with a Kuhn disc mower and a 495 NH haybine. I do some custom baling and want a smaller machine for some of the fields but bigger than the disc mower. We bought this one for now and are trying to find another on in in better shape and use the $350 for parts.

I bought a NH 469 for $400 about 20 years ago. Probably put another $2,000 in it with new rolls, the roll bearings, all new chains, PTO bearings and knife. I ran it about 14 years and sold it for $1,200. I knew what I was getting into, but, probably should have bought a machine with better rolls and just replaced the other stuff. The rolls are very expensive. Too expensive.

Yup, we have a shop that does that kind of machine work one town over. The was the plan and then maybe pick up another used roller from All States Ag Parts.

(quoted from post at 22:58:50 06/05/16) There is a replacement shaft for JD rollers. Have to cut out the old and weld in the new at a machine shop.

Evidently JD has discontinued or subbed the part number of the roller stub shaft

The part AE48769 is no longer available. Contact your local John Deere dealer for other options.
