opinions on 2 row planters

I've found a couple JD 2-row corn planters for sale. They're both the same price, in good working condition, with row markers. One is a 24-B, no fertilizer hoppers, but is hydraulic lift and about 30 minutes from my house. The other is a 290, has fertilizer hoppers, and is ground-driven lift, but is about 1.5 hours away. Any suggestions on which one to buy?

24-B would be a unit planter for a 3 point hitch tool bar requiring you to have a 3 point hitch tractor. The 290 is a pull type for ant drawbar type tractor or forecart for use behind horses. And I have never hear of markers for a tool bar, may be out there but I have not sean them. What model tractor do you want to pull it with, that could be desision maker.

I have a two row tool bar with two 25B planter units attached,
My planter does not have markers, not saying I could not use them from time to time,
Do not see how you would mount them on the universal toolbar

The planter does a good job, John Deere dealer was able to order me some bearings i needed for the fertilizer hoppers, so parts are still available,

Dave Hydraulic lift is the only way to go. Suggestion--If you can use 1 I think you can buy a 4 row 494A Jd planter for less than most 2 rows.

I think you are right,
A friend gave me a 494 planter, but my little tractor does not have an external hydraulic connection, so I could not lift it,
I traded it even to another friend for the little two row planter with the 25b planter units. I only use it to garden and truck patch with, some of my patches are small, the pull type planter would have been an over kill.

Was a good deal for both of us

Update: The 290 had already sold. The planter listed as a 24B looks from the pics to be a 290 with 24B hoppers. I'm going to look at it this weekend...

A 290 with the optional hydrolic lift is rare. And I don't know enough about those unit planters to knoe difference in seed hoppers but fertilizer for the unit would not fit on the 290. I have 4 290 planters setting here for rebuilding into 3 usuable planters for resale but time and health has kept me from getting it done. A 290 with the hydrolic lift was designed for the JD B cylinder that is an 8" stroke 2 1/2" bore cylinder, newer higher pressure tractor system could use a 2" cylinder, go up to a larger cylinder it will raise to slow.
