Hello and thx- yes these are the parts I am looking for belt guard # 17 and transport rod # 3- any idea where I can get them?

Yoy should be able to make that rod, just a 3' piece of threaded redi-rod and coup[le of nuts.

I could make the rod, yes..not exactly sure where it hooks to on the blade, but that is not a big concern. the cover is the item I really need- any ideas are more than welcome?

I have a #38 sickle mower and misplaced the rod (lost in the field) years ago. I simply use a light weight chain around the mower frame and a large hook on the end of the chain that I hook on the bar between the sickle guards. Then I wrap the whole chain around the frame while mowing. I realize this won't be what you want if restoring for parades/shows, but it works for me. My 2 cents.

The rod should have a hole in the bar to fit the rod, up about 2 1/2 to 3 feet. Standard for all makes and models of mowers.

Thank you for the idea on the chain- I did think about that as a potential solution, however you are right in the fact I am obsessed with original condition restoration. I love the mower-rebuild and set the blade with new cutters- works very well on my Oliver super 55 tractor.
