ihc cyclo air planters

i have a 400 cyclo planter. i looked at some newer ones like 800, 900 & 955. is it pto drives hydraulic which turns air blower ? how did that work ? any problems ? any other comments on these gen planters.

Had a 400 cyclo for 25 years and now have a 800 cyclo. The 800 is head and shoulders above a 400 and has the same openers, etc. as the 1200 series. Fan drives by a pto hydraulic pump.....works good.

Cyclo 800 is a great planter for the buck. I have an 8 row and the fan runs off what I believe is an old power steering pump that hooks to the 1000 rpm pto on my 1520. It worked good year one and then the pump started to fail. Only planted half population in year two. I had the option of fixing it but a JD 7000 6 row came down the road "cheap" at $800 last summer and I picked it up because I have a 6 row corn head. I say "cheap" because I have $1600 in parts alone into it as of today and would have been much more but for a couple of generous forum members who donated time and parts. I rebuilt the JD from the ground up. It is a really nice planter. I will tell you, though, there are some things about the Cyclo 800 that I like better. Like one seed hopper. Like being able to look back and see it is working. And it is a simpler machine. Any old planter of the era will need a fair amount of work, so be sure to have a budget for it.

But a John Deere or Kinzie finger pickup with precision parts will more than pay for itself. Reason most corn is planted with them. Sorry

I'm not going to criticize the JD planter. I have one and I really like it a lot. But I can tell you that a properly tuned up and operated IH will plant a very precise stand also. I had a great stand a couple years ago. If it were not for the issue of a six row corn head I would probably have repaired the 8 row cyclo and not bought the JD...but I needed 6 rows and there it was at the auction. Both planters do an excellent job. Right now the JD is planting better than the IH did last year, but not better than the IH did two years back. There are inconsistencies in a couple of the row units that I am having trouble isolating. Frankly, do not have time to isolate because I need to get done. Quantity of planters sold is not the sole criteria of quality. If it were then McDonald's hamburgers would be the greatest food on earth. Both planters are fine units. I'm waiting to see what actually comes out of ground.

The pto pump on my 800 was a pain in the butt , and it finally gave up and needed to be replaced . I posted a question here on YT about running the planter right off the tractor , and I was told that this would work , but you have to have a separate line for the return that will just dump the return oil back into the tractor . Not through the hydraulic out lets. I have been running my planter this waay ow for several years , works well for me . You need a tractor with decent hydraulic pump and flow , 15 - 20 gal. per min. will work fine . Lots of good advise here on these forums to guide you through with this planter if you take the plunge .

had a 8 row 400 and a 8 row 955 now a 16 row 1250 which isnt a cyclo air but the parts on the row units ae same but had good luck with cyclo just set them rite and check it set it up do ahalf round check it.
also 3.0 to 3.5 mph they work very good
