Hesston under-serrated sections

I bought a 1090 haybine that has smooth (and very dull) sections. I called Webb's Sickle Service and they do not carry smooth sections, just over and under-serrated. My owners manual says to NOT use under-serrated sections; anybody know why? Have you used under-serrated sections in a Hesston with no troubles in grass? The previous owner said he used the smooth sections in grass and over-serrated for coarse stuff like oats. I'd like to get new sections on this bar, just not sure what to use.

Use over serrated sections. The guards are not designed for US sections, it will chew them up. Also the sections are the heavy thickness, sorry can't recall off the top of my head what the actual measurement is.

That is kind of strange. I just purchased a 7' sickle for my IH mower. It is coming with smooth sections. The Webb's part number for smooth sections is RSM (regular smooth) RSMPL (regular smooth plated) XHSM (extra heavy smooth) and XHSNPL (extra heavy smooth plated). I never talked to anyone, but did it all from their web site. I think you need to go on line and look. They also recommend smooth sections for grasses that are sometimes wet.

Use overserrated. Fortget the Rest Chrome is even better, a bit more costly but last longer. Overserrated tends to be self sharpening.

My MF32 sickle mower's manual says to use serrated sections with smooth ledger plates (guards) and smooth guards with serrated ledger plates (guards).

My Hesston says to use top-serrated sections and specifically says not to use under-serrated sections. While there is some debate about this - Hesston claims the top-serrated sections are self sharpening. If the section is top-serrated and flush/in contact with the ledger surface of the guard, IMHO - they have to be self sharpening - just as a function of how they wear.

My Hesston 1110 has a lot of mileage on it - not sure how old/used the over-serrated sections are, but what I do know is they are ultra sharp. The only thing I need to do is adjust a hold down and/or bend up a guard such that the underside of the section and the ledger top surface are in contact at a few locations.

I also have a manual that covers the New Holland 472 and 488 haybines and just skimming over it, they speak to smooth, under/top-serrated sections but I believe they are silent on which is best - only that you shouldn't try to sharpen a top-serrated section.

Below is a thread I started regarding this same subject.

Good luck,
Bill
