how to adjust spacing on JD P7100 corn planter

I have a older JD P7100 corn planter serial # 036296A that I need to know how to adjust the spacing of the corn seeds. I use it for a 6 acre corn maze that i plant in two directions across the field. Because I plant in perpendicular directions I am putting down about 70,000 seeds per acre. While I want it thicker for the maze I need to thin it out a bit for better growth. I think it plants about 8" apart. I would like to extend the distance between seeds. I really not a farmer so this is all new to me. Thanks for your help.

There is a seed transmission or set of sprockets with a drive and driven chain. You change the chain form one pair of gears to another to change the spacing. The gears also slide so your not limited to just the four sets.

Here is a picture of the seed sprockets. You will need to figure out what seeding rate per acre you want. You will need to know row spacing(30 inch, 36 or 38 inch). Then you can look up the sprocket setting you need. An operators manual will list the setting and you should be able to find a copy of the seed rate chart on the net.

Caution!!! Make sure you understand driven and drive. The chart refers to the driven sprockets and the drive. You need to get it correct. If you invert the terms the seeding rate will be wrong.

To adjust the rate you loosen the set screw on the right side of the picture. That allows you to rotate the idles rollers to loosen the chain. You can then slide the sprockets around to get the rate you want.

Use that set of gears, the transmission, to switch seeding rates as the other fella pictured.

Older 7000 planters had the double length chain links and had a 7, 9, 11, etc sprockets.

Newer 7000 planters had regular chain links and sprockets of 14, 18, 22, etc.

You need to possibly double or cut in half the sprocket tooth count to make a new or old manual work with an old or new planter.

Shoup is a great company to get JD 7000 planter parts from, they offer better service and cheaper parts than most of the new mega JD
dealerships any more. They have a special sprocket that will let your planter run 1/2 of normal seed rate, you might want that. They are on line,
look them up.

I would -highly- recommend getting a JD 7000/ 7100 planter manual. (Same planter, the 7100 is a 3pt, the 7000 is on wheels and a hitch.) it is
very very good to have a planter manual. They are all over, dealers, eBay, etc.
