5530 hesston baler

Pull it? Yeah, I'd think so. Make a full sized round bale? Maybe. I've made 5x5 rounds with a 30hp Cockshutt, but I worked the snot out of that tractor doing it and it was really slow. On a flat with perfect hay you might do it. But a little 530 would be more the right size for a little tractor like that. I think those are 39"x42" or something like that.

Yes, on flat ground. Hills with a full bale will challenge that tractor. I have made tens of thousands of bales using a later version the 530. It doesn't take a lot of hp, but you need to spin it as fast as possible to make a good looking bale. Best bales I ever made were with a deutz 120 hp running the pto at 1000, but pulling the throttle back to just over half. This spun the baler about 700rpm. Used this tractor two seasons until I bought a second 4020. Wife bales with one , me on the other. Easy to kick out 200-250 Bales a day.

We have a 5530 and a 530. The manuals say 35 hp minimum. Your tractor will pull hard when the chamber gets close to full, but you can probably get by. Do you have a set of hydraulic remotes on the tractor. Is it a manual threader or electric? Those balers weigh around 2500 pounds. These balers give very little trouble and are easy to work on when they need maintenance.

What kind of hay will you be rolling? We do mostly fescue and orchard grass.

Not many choices in small balers, New Holland made a 630 4x4 baler but it will probably pull harder than a Hesston 5530 or 530.
My 640 NH pulled harder than the 5540 Hesston it replaced.

As I understand it, the 530 and 5530 are not the same bale size. The 530 makes a much smaller bale, or am I misinformed?

The 5530 and 530 are basically the same baler. The twine arm and knife are different, as well as how the gathering wheels attach. Both of these items were improved on the 530. They both have 39"x54" bale chamber, and in reality make a 39x48 roll that weighs about 300 pounds. The 530 and CaseIH 8420 are the same baler. Massey and New Idea also had/have their paint and model numbers on this baler.

They are fairly popular for us small operators in this part of the country.

We had a 5530 and currently have a 530. We pulled it with a 48 hp JD 2155 and baled as fast as you wanted although I had to drop a gear going up hill. The last bales we weighed that had been run through a conditioner weighed about 400 lbs. I would say if your are on flat ground you should be fine. I really like the 530 since it has electric tie and I currently run it with a 75 hp tractor but the 5520 is a darn good baler. Best of luck to you.
