NH 488 Reel bats

Anybody tried 1x6 deck boards to replace the (rusty on mine) reel bats on a 488?

Can't speak to the 488, but a member here Rankrank1 has a Hesston 1120 haybine which is a 9ft model and he used wood for his bats.

Other than weight, don't know why it wouldn't work.
