Odd pto powered one way

Wonder why it has PTO power. Looks to me like the discs would turn simply by going forward same as the ones here do. The disc plows are about like what I'm seeing if I'm seeing what I think I am.

I think they've designed it for use in sticky rice paddy soil. Powering the disks lets them turn faster against the scrapers vs. ground speed, so less likely to plug?

Many years ago in Farm Show i think it was, a western farmer built a self propelled disk. Basically put a tractor on top of a big disk and powered the gangs from the drivetrain.

He said the experts said it wouldn't work too much slip, but he was happy with the results.

That makes some sense. Use it for poor scouring conditions.

A regular moldboard doesn't work very well in the soils around here, they're too heavy and sticky. The fence row tools from "back in the day" are invariably disk based.

I remember seeing the story about the self propelled disc. I did find it and it was in farmshow in 1979. Wonder how long he used it or maybe still is?

So do you think the blades are powered to turn in the opposite direction to travel?
I can see they would really slice if that was the case.
I can also see that they would wear out fast if the land was gravelly, but if designed for wet conditions maybe OK.

I was thinking of altering a one-way we have to three -point hitch!........would stop it sliding sideways in some conditions, but think it would be hard to corner with it in the ground!

Think same thing as a piece of meat on your plate and your dinner knife, if you just try to press the knife down it will be hard to cut that piece of meat, if you slide it while pressing down it cuts a lot easier. Samw way with the disk blades. And I do remember seeing them advertised years ago, don't remember names or anything though. Just like a tiller blade if it turns at ground speed it will not do much work but speed it up and see the difference. With disk blades it was just easier to add weight to get that cutting factor than to try to power the blades and that would take a lot more power.

I can't tell which way the blades might be spinning. If they go in direction opposite of travel then I wonder if it would affect how the dirt is thrown.

I too have wondered how a mounted one-way would function.
