JD 7000 planter, 100 monitor

I am having an issue with this monitor on the planter. All components are present...monitor, power module, harness, 6 sensors. Monitor is hooked directly to battery. All plugs on components match, there are no adapters used. When monitor is powered up, all sensors light in seed tubes. We have attempted to tune the monitor as per manual, but cannot do so because the lights on the monitor never go off to indicate they are registering seed flow even at the lowest setting. It is verified the planter is planting with good flow and we are running at planting speed. Seems like at least ONE row should tell me that.

Anyone have any idea what/where the problem is likely to be?

With anything electrical check ground first. My last 7000 I bought cheap at auction...talked to buyer before, he said monitor didn"t work. Had JD diesel tech son check it with equipment....says it works fine if you plug in the main harness connector (planter to tractor), then pull plug out an eighth inch. I use PB Blaster on it, wire brush, plug in, back out a bit...worked for 10 years now! Planting beans, the lights should start going out at about 1/3 setting. Corn is a higher setting, with lower population.

I had already cleaned the plug connections. They are fairly bright. The only ground I know of is the one for the power unit. It is attached to the negative battery post and both the monitor and sensors light steadily so not thinking the ground is the problem.

How old are the sensors ? Just because they light up does not mean they are good.

They make a sensor checker, it uses a 9 volt battery and beeps when you drop a seed through the tube.

It seems kind of strange that they all would be bad though, but a possibility I guess.

I can't remember if that monitor has a hi/low population switch.... if so is it set right ?

I don't know how old the sensors are. They came with the planter. The monitor does have a hi/lo switch and it is set correctly to low. I suppose I could see if the JD dealer has a sensor tester for sale or loan? Or do I pull them off and take them to the dealer? Just trying to narrow down where to look.

The tester I have came from Shoup. You take the planter box off, unplug the three small sensor wires at the row unit, and plug the tester to the sensor there. You should hear the tester beep for every seed you drop through the seed tube.
No beeps-bad sensor.

Not sure what your planting with my friend has a 1066 and seems like every year I have to remind him or his help not to hook to the neg terminal of the bat or else they will only get 6 volts. they always remember to use the pos on the left side but just can't remember the neg.

That's a curious statement to me as I have no idea what it means? I am using a 1586 and to the best of my knowledge...12 volt batteries. I know I am tired and my Spring allergies are acting up and you got me second guessing myself but the tractor is 12 volt right?

Well I don't have time to wait for Shoup. That will put me off until Tuesday at the earliest and then I still have to diagnose it. corn is going in the ground this weekend. My daughter on a 4 wheeler behind the planter is as good a monitor as I will get at that point!

Dave, it's been some time since I have had to work on a 7000 planter monitor harness but as I remember the green wire in the harness is the common sensor wire. I would start looking at a broken green wire in the harness somewhere. Your red wire provides power and the black is the ground and these are apparently intact given your lights are on. It takes a signal from the sensor (green) wire to turn off the lights. Look for a broken or otherwise impaired green wire somewhere. Mike

Just curious, how is someone on a 4 wheeler riding behind the planter going to tell if the planter is running right and planting correctly??

If you don't know, you can lower your 7000 down to just above where the discs are in the ground and drive forward. The seeds will be dropped on top of the soil so you can see for sure operation and distance and population.
I always fill boxes to exactly the same level to obviate individual box problem.

yes you're ok the way it's hooked 86 series has 2 12v batts connected paralell, a 66 series on back to o6 series ih tractors have 2 6 volt batteries connected in series the problem arises when they access the pos post for 12v they don't realize the neg is on the other side of the tractor to get 12v or as I usually just ground it to the frame.

LOL! She just makes sure the chains are turning. It was easier with the Cyclo 800 because there was the big drum on the front and she watched it for me so I could keep my eye on the field and pressure. The Cyclo had a sticky main drive clutch that slipped when you stopped watching it. As far as seeding rate and hopper? That we took on faith...and it worked for the most part. :)

Thanks Mike! I went all over that harness today and even did continuity checks and meter checked for shorts. Everything seems to be intact. I agree with you, the monitor is not getting a signal from the sensors. I just don't seem to be able to find out where the problem is. JD service is happy to come out and look at it...about $500 give or take a hundred. Not much help beyond that.

Yes, I do know and have done so already. We have had to give up on the monitor. It just lights up and never goes off. Doesn't matter what you do. It will not register any seed flow.

Dave, you may have to take the cover off the connectors to be sure a wire hasn't come unsoldered. It has to be a harness problem. Mike

Well as it happens, I have a day off tomorrow! Planter is otherwise complete and the elevator will not be open to get my urea. I will have a look see at it!
