I'm trying to adjust the slack out of the reel chain on my 479 haybine.Took the belt off, removed the chain loosened the bolt on the adjuster but reel won't budge its stuck. So I was going to remove the big sprocket to spin the shaft to free up but the teeth won't clear the inside of the machine needs about 3/16 inch. Sprayed it down maybe it will loosen up ? any tricks or advice to adjust reel chain? Does the reel shaft come out inside? or out side?
Thanks for all your help Joe

If I understand correctly you are trying to tighten that little No. 40 chain that runs the drive belt. you may be going about it the wrong way. I own a 488 new holland and if your 479 is the same,( i think it probably is) you need to crawl underneath and look at the back side of that shaft. the shaft bearing is mounted on an eccentric, you'll loosen or remove a bolt and rotate to tighten the chain, then retighten or replace the bolt. i don't believe you should need to remove any belts.

Learn something everyday on here. Mine has been way too lose for the last 10 years, just could not figure out how to tighten it up.

I have the adjustment bolt out and the other 2 bolts out and the adjustment bracket off. Seems that the oblong shaft that the sprocket fits on to is froze and won't turn. My concern is that it has 1 inch of slack in it and the manual says 1/4 inch and don't want to tear anything up because of a loose chain. I've tried to drive the shaft out (from the inside) with a brass rod and a BFH and a lot of PB blaster didn't move. And can't take the sprocket off to try and make the oblog shaft to rotate because it has 1/2 of a tooth higher than the frame. Anyone ever had one with the shaft froze?
Thanks Joe

I guess heat would help, but likely ruin seal on bearing. Loosen or remove adjusting bolt. leave bracket attached to shaft (other two bolts). tap bracket one way or the other with a hammer to tighten chain. replace adjusting bolt. If slot in bracket doesn't allow for enough adjustment, move bolt to another hole.
