Cole MX-12 Planter Questions

I just picked up a fairly nice 2 row MX-12 this weekend at an auction. Seed boxes are good, lots of plates, but I will need to rebuild some of the fertilizer boxes. The question I have is has anyone run the fertilizer attachment without having the slide slicer disc on? Mine does not have it, did not come with it at the sale, but I see it in the manual. It looks like you could run without it and still get acceptable fertilizer placement. I am looking to plant pumpkins with it in a few weeks and hopefully can get it all set up by then.

Second try for a picture.

What do you mean when you say "slider disk"? Do you mean the disk that runs by the press wheel to cut a furrow for the fertilizer? Or do you mean the fertilizer feed adjustment in the fertilizer box? I can tell you that either way, you will not be happy with your placement because a) your fert. won't be down where the seed is, but rather on top of the ground; and/or b) you will be putting out WAY too much, which will burn up young seedlings. Please understand that this is just guesswork on my part until you can tell me exactly which part you're missing. I had a 1-row Cole just like yours and I still have some literature on it. If you don't have the book you can get it from Cole's website, free.

Mac - I do not have the disk that runs by the press wheel to cut a fertilizer furrow. I wasn't sure if the fertilizer fell in a slice made by that disk or in the opening the runner for the seed made. I am pretty sure you answered my question though and I need to get the slice disk for my fertilizer to be properly applied. I already know I need to get a new fertilizer feed adjustment set up for the fertilizer hopper itself. I think they call it the fertilizer cut-off band in the manual. Rest of the fertilizer hopper is in good shape as well as the wheel and gears. Just looking to get a parts list together and place one order.

Yes, if the fert cutoff is shot, you'll need a new one. HOWEVER... if you're like me (read: tightwad) you'll not really want to spend that much for the cutoff band. I made mine it the shop with a hacksaw and some tin snips out of a piece of stove pipe. It worked fine. The disk is also necessary, like I mentioned. Again, you can improvise and find a straight, smooth disk. A dished blade wouldn't do a good job, IMHO. At any rate, let us know what you decide to do, and how planting goes.

Thanks
Mac
