Disc mowers

Looking for a disc mower, like to have some input on the mowers from the galley. This is new to me still using the old cycle bar mower. Have a 1070 case to use. Trying to update equipment. Will be cutting grass hay.

New or used?

I own a Vermeer & a Krone & both brands have been good. Kuhn disc mowers have a very good reputation and they have built disc mowers for both JD & NH.

I've got a 12 foot JD moco. I think it is a 935 model. I love it. I'd hate to think of how many acres I put through it (I custom bales for a while) but I've never done anything but maintenance and a main belt. Mine takes a lot of horsepower, but that's probably the flail conditioners. It's also a 1000 rpm. I didn't realize it and got snookered into it, but I don't mind it now because those shafts are lighter to hook up. It will mow as fast as you can stay in the seat. I replace the blades once a year but only do a couple hundred acres of hay plus alfalfa anymore. You will wonder how you ever got along without it. I know a lot of guys like their three point machines, but mine is not. I can't imagine wrangling that thing.

We have a 9ft JD 925 and it works great but is noisy as all out doors especially of you are running open station. Takes near 100hp to run it but works great. It has dry bevel gears that power the impellor which is where the noise comes from. 926's are the same, if you had an older 1327,1360 or a newer model JD it would have a belt driven impellor and be super quiet.

I have a 10 foot Kuhn, and it is a lovely machine. It has the poly 'V' tines and works well on any type of hay.
Yes, you can cut as fast as you like but I usually say to 6-6.5 MPH with it.
The old JD 40-10 and 3130 would handle it, but in heavy stuff they needed to get their breath back now and again. I now use it on a near new Landini Vision 105, and it handles anything I have without a problem. (100 horse)

Kuhn did make cutter -bars for other makes for a long time. maybe still do.
The county up here uses Kuhn cutters for road sides and that says a lot.

Had mine maybe 7 years now.
Only thing I don't like is you have to buy a new drop -in unit for the disc drives. Can't just replace the bearings. Seems Kuhn has these bearings made and no-one else can sell them!
Still, I have only replaced 2 or 3 in all those years.

Richard.

Got a new holland late last year.

Now I have to be careful not to cut more than I can bale.... It so much fun cutting hay, goes so fast.
