Tedder/Rake Questions

I'm looking to upgrade my hay rake to a unit that will both rake and tedder such as a New Holland 254. Question is will it do both operations well or one well and the other half %ss? Second question is will I be able to gather 2 or 3 rows of light hay into one like I can with my side delivery rake or do the basket type rakes only gather to the center?
Any suggestions on model of tedder/rake combo will be appreciated.

My experience with the NH 254 series is not the best. Have to go slow and they cost a lot to keep going. Parts are very pricey. I would buy a regular tedder and use the rake I had. Save for a nice rake in the future.

Problems included: Crappy odd size tires/wheels,Hard to shift mechanism from tedder to rake, Plastic parts abound at wear points and are very expensive to replace. I spent lots of $ on mine. Now sits in fence row close to junk pile. Know of several around here in the same situation.

Look up Haybob on youtube. I have 2. Very common in europe. Very reliable and parts are easy to get.
But only 10 or 11 ft wide.

Run Forrest, RUN.

The 254 works fine when it works. Holding it all together is the problem. Just pass on it AND the 255 that was supposed to be an upgrade of
the 254. If you're stuck on the concept the PZ Haybob is the only one I'd really consider. Those are simple. Other than constantly replacing
teeth and springs and occasionally welding a broken frame... they are pretty decent. If you think that sounds bad..... stop and ask yourself
why I say that is good compared to the 254......................................

The only time "254" and "upgrade" can be used together is with the inclusion of the word 'from'.

We used a PZ Haybob for years back in England.
Worked very well with only superficial stuff falling off.

Here, I couldn't find one, but have had good luck with a Kuhn rotary rake.
Must have had it over 10 years now, and only broken one tine.
Sure, some of the tinny guards fell off, but the machine itself keeps going with no problems.
Only problem had been the stupid little tyres. Had a few go flat and a couple of rims break up.

Can't comment on 254 but have a Kuhn gyro and have used haybob. What I see is this (taking out mechanical issues) Small farm or fields you got one rig to do both jobs. I keep mine as it is a good back up if either my tedder or rake goes down!!! They are not good for doubling windrows and are much narrower than a large 4 spinner tedder. They usually need a 3 pth tractor where as a tow behind can be used with older non 3 pth tractor. And I thought, depending on hay that they ted better than rake.

Those new Holland Tedder rake
combos are.....well.....a real
great IDEA..... but NOT great
machine! We had two of them....went
to a Heston Tedder, and kept our
256 rakes. Like you said, any
machine that does the job of two
usually does one (or both) half
azzed. AND they are a fun enjoyment
to hook up! Buy a rake and a Tedder
and life will be much better....I
promise

I have a Kuhn rake/tedder. Not my favorite piece of equipment. It's a better rake than tedder, but at that it's not a great rake. It teds though, and that's the important part. Rakes are relatively easy to find in my area, tedders not so much. Not that I can afford anyway.
