If I am going to mow using a finish mower
that is belt driven do I need to have a slip clutch on my PTO shaft.

Been mowing for 20 years with a 5 foot King Kutter finish mower. If I hit something too thick or a big stick gets caught in the mower, The belt just slips. So I would say no.

One of those, probably doesn't hurt to have, but don't need to have, deals.

My brother in law used a 4 foot finish mower for rough cutting for 4 years; he didn't realize that brush hogs have flex able cutting blades and he didn't want to wreck his tractor so he did this on purpose..... Anyhow the point is, he wrecked about a dozen belts on the Finnish mower, but the tractor was fine so it worked without a slip clutch.

It would depend on what your mowing conditions are. But at the price of new belts it wouldn't take long to pay for a PTO slip clutch.

I use a 6' woods behind a 1020. No slip clutch. A finish mower isn't a bush hog so I don't wade into anything too high or thick. Once I did discover a wire tomato cage the owner neglected to remove or tell me about. Belt smoked a lot before I got it shutdown but no permanent issues.

Thanks all
I think I will be Ok with out the grass I am going to mow is light
no brush. open field

A Finish mower will "Push" the tractor, if it has any decent brakes at all..

In fact, I want NO ORC, so I can STOP that durned Bush Hog, if an emergency occurs..which is NOT possible with an ORC..

With decent brakes, you can stop a Bush Hog in 3 to 6' I would guess ( assuming the "Newer tractors will stop as well as the old NON-LIVE PTO ), which is what I still use..

Just release the Main Clutch and Stand on the Brakes..everything will come to a Big WHOA right away...

My son in law's step dad rolled a Ferguson because he didn't have an ORC with a brush hog. He got to close to a stump, stepped on the clutch and it pushed him right up on it and over. He didn't have three to six feet to stop.

I have shear bolts on my brush cutter i had overrunning before and I prefer overrunning . I found out with the shear bolt that you have to set the 3 point arms on float it seems to have less chance of shearing a bolt. Instead of digging in a hump of dirt or other obstacles it will ride over .
