First time plowing results

Ok, I rebuilt the old JD F125 plow and got it in the dirt tonight. Sure felt good. I've never run one before but read loads of posts here to learn as much as I could about set up and technique and gave it a try. Ground speed made the biggest difference from the first row to what I think looks pretty good where I finished. I and to do better next time I have the chance to use it.

Let me know your opinions if you would please, I'm so new to this I will take all the help I can get. I hope to turn the hay fields this fall.

Thank you for the feedback. I was running a 16" moldboard plow that seemed to be cutting about 10" deep. I will check the tail wheel depth and see how it is set. What else can I check to see improve the depth of cut

I think it looks pretty good for a first timer. I have had younger neighbors try to plow, but they knew it all and won't listen to any old timers. They usually make a mess. I am 64, and when we go to Rantoul, Il. to the half century show, my wife says " why do most guys under 50, not know how to plow?" I told her they were born too late. I still try to moldboard plow a little every year to stay in practice.

Your comments make me think of my neighbor's large farm. He went all no-till a number of years ago and since then his not-raised-on-a-farm son-in-law has joined the operation. I have considered that, unless something changes with their practices, this young man might spend his life farming and never know what it is like to till the soil on a scale bigger than a garden. Not just with a moldboard plow, but with any tillage implement since there is not a single one to be found on their place. I'd guess that there are a lot of younger farmers around that are the same way.

To Wildride47 - that plowing job looks top notch! You have a right to be especially proud of your ruler-straight furrows!

looks like your old plow is doing a good clean job,

you should see some of my plowing work, using my old MF double disk plow, one rough ride disking down the ground after plowing.

I have been farming for well over 45 years and have not used a mold board plow in at least 30 years. Our old 5 bottom JD plow was parked in a fence row after the last time it was used. No one around here plows any more. No need for it. A waste of time and tractor hours.

That 16" bottom was designed to plow at 8" depth, at 10" the back end of the moldboards are trying to lift the plow up when sliding over the soil. Plowing too deep with a plow is why about all plows you will find have the bottom edge of the moldboard at the back wore either razer sharp or even completely missing. All bottoms are designed for depth of one half width of cut unless you get what is called a deep tillage bottom and they are scarce, do not know if Deere even made one but MF did as that is what I had, found out after I had bought it and parts would not fit and had trouble getting correct parts and then would have had to plow too deep for my ground.

Nice job good straight lines and nice turn
over. I plowed shallow in sod for easier
plowing then a foot deep in stubble my dad
always plowed at the same depth with no 8
international had a bad plow pan took
years to loosen up. Also liked to use it
to build diversion for water i would plow
one way and build a hump. Even going to no
till still like to use it for fixing
waterways .
