New Holland 848 Round Baler Questions

I have picked up a lot of acreage this year, so I'm thinking about round baling some of it. I found a nice 848 a couple hours away for a really good price. I know it is supposed to make a 4x5 bale, but I know most 4x5 balers are capable of making a 4x4. Will this baler do that? Also, what tying system does it use?

i have had an 848 baler for about 10 years. it was mostly worn out then, but it still keeps on making bales. i am sure it would make a 4x4 bale just as well as the 4x5. there is an automatic overfill shear bolt, a good thing if you get daydreaming while baling. the chain reverses to help eject the finished bale. my baler has hydraulic tying; arms move from both sides. not sure if auto tie was an available option. i would buy another one in an instant.

My 848 has a manual tie - a hand crank that you reach around and spin. Some of them had electric tie - some had hydraulic tie.

I guess you could make as small of a bale as you wanted to - when I finish up a field, I often have a 2 foot diameter bale.

My 848 doesn't have floor chains, and some folks on here say that theirs has floor chains. I guess mine is newer (or older) and different.

I really like my 848 - it matches my small equipment just right. You'll notice that no one wants a chain baler anymore, so the price should reflect that, I'd think.

I had an 848 for about 4 years as a 2nd baler. It
made a very nice bale. It would make a 4x5 bale
completely full. I also made 4x4 bales with it for my
miniature horses. I believe it would make as small
as 3 feet otherwise it isn't packed tight. Mine also
had hydraulic tie. Slow and steady was the ticket. If
you try to go to fast it will plug. I always ran the
airbags at 35psi. Biggest reason for getting rid of it
was that my v rake was to wide and couldn't find
crowder wheels for it and felt I was wasting to much
hay. Ended up buying another 5x5 Vermeer with
crowder wheels. Of the new holland chain balers I
think they were one of the best since they had the
drum on the bottom and not the chains for rolling
the bale.
